DISCOBOLI: The Cosmic Game

“Polka dots are a way to Infinity.” Yoyoi Kusama*

DISCOBOLI follows the illuminating eclipse-born images of MENLA as the next in a series of new Light Mind Image collections that endeavor to blow the frame of a finitely conditioned view of Nature and the self, without relying on preconceptions, mental distortions, or imagined or intuited abstractions of reality. Their compelling power is rooted in an expanded inner perception and the capacity to translate, with openness and clear vision, a grounded experience of a more unbound, multidimensional reality.   From the space of a meditative mind plunged into the infinite depths of being beyond the narrow compass of the past, they invite us into a relationship with life beyond the world of the conditioned physical senses where forms and energies intertwine, and the flow of Cosmic Intelligence or infinite Source Consciousness is universally networked within Nature, our human totality, and all existence. As they crack the shell of conditioned thoughts and blow the frame of finite outer sensory reasoned reality, LMI free the limited self to take its creative seat in the Cosmic Source Field and evolve as the wholly integrated and universally networked expressions of Infinite Consciousness, energy and intelligence that we are.  With evocative power, LMI project a boundaryless experience of both physical and subtle planes of existence and are portals, not for transcending the finite dimensions of nature and the self as if false or without purpose, but for networking the self as a more evolved human totality with the unlimited capacity to perceive and successfully navigate a reality that is both finite and infinite, individual and universal.

Through a voice projected in photographic works of a universally convergent reality which transcends outer forms, we are given the courage to confront our own physical sensory dominated experiences and preconceptions of nature and the self as solely separate and finite.  And as if seeing with something other than physical eyes, we experience a perception of an unfathomed and more unlimited new space of existence. In images increasingly void of familiar conditioned forms in Nature, without the presence of human figures, or conventional treatments of light which imprison an image in time, the Viewer finds him or herself alone, carried beyond localized time and across the threshold of the known self where all preconceptions about who we are and what kind of reality our limited past perceptions have sustained are called into question.

 DISCOBOLI Collection Insights

Sports as spiritual exercise may be a foreign concept today, however the earliest athletes and first participants in the game of cosmic play are said by some to have been the “Gods” themselves; forces emanating from a Source Energy and Intelligence that were willed to go and manifest their infinite unfulfilled potential in the realm of spacetime. There is an ancient belief that from their perfect union they separated and began “the game”; to reach the farthest distance from their Source, to become as strong and multifaceted as a diamond, and win their return home, traveling from dense to subtler and subtler planes of existence, through networked dimensions of matter and immateriality. All life in matter was then created as an expression of their will to see the goal, reach the goal and see another…each time projecting more of their true potential and expanding creation as we know it with unlimited capacity.

While the marathons, home runs and goals of the sports so deeply embedded in our global culture today may reflect some of the form of the once heralded cosmic game, much of its essence has been lost to mass audiences of spectators seeking passive entertainment, vicarious victories in a world heavy with seemingly insurmountable challenges, or to witness capacities idealized as greater than those they perceive themselves to possess. DISCOBOLI re-connects us to the multi-dimensional life and power waiting to be realized within each of us.  It celebrates the fact that to fathom potential beyond our perceived limits, to realize we are more than finite flesh, and that there is a way through every block is the right of all human beings, not merely an exclusive or athletically gifted few. Athletes remain our modern-day gods in a way; those to whom so many give their devotion and support, but there is much more still to be won within the self and the network of the cosmic game.

The Collection title DISCOBOLI translates as “the discus throwers”. The discus as an athletic event is specifically mentioned in Homer’s Iliad and noted in Egyptian hieroglyphs as part of honorary displays during coronations and other sovereign proceedings. It was one of the iconic events of the Greek pentathlon and further revered in early Greek and later Roman sculptures like Myron’s 5th century BC Discobolus. Where those works of art created impressions of an ideal physical form, DISCOBOLI idealizes a human experience which includes and goes beyond the physical; that recalls the cosmic play and the forces of Nature marking steps before us on a pathway through the unexplored dimensions of self into the unknown realms of causation and infinite Consciousness.

DISCOBOLI turns us toward something in phenomenal nature that challenges the limits of conditioned forms and belongs to a higher, more universal reality. It takes us through a window of transformation in early winter when the first snow of the season comes to rest on the face of a semi-frozen pond. There, in ephemeral repetitions of perfect circles, it is as if the Gods have descended from the heavens into a field of crystal light to throw the discus once again; to honor the awakening of our greater human totality and guide us more surely toward the realization and coronation of our highest Self. We do not see the discus, only silhouettes of the players and perfect disc shaped impressions left by the arc of their throws. They draw us into the field of a subtle realm of play; one that stirs our curiosity and leads us within.  The more we experience them, the more they become like black hole openings to more unlimited dimensions of timespace; part of the energetic architecture of a network of Cosmic Energy and Intelligence serving the evolution and intercommunication of physical and nonphysical forms in an infinite universe of existence. The more they beckon us to consider what portals of energy lie unfelt in the networking architecture of our own human totality.

DISCOBOLI portrays a space where, even physically embodied on Earth, we are at play in a cosmic game of evolving the Self in alignment with networked energies and capacities we have yet to fully access and integrate. More importantly, it calls us to remember that we each play an equally important role in the game, each emanations of the same Infinite Consciousness; one team ultimately striving not against one another in competition, but against the limits of the finite self to refine the desires and Light of the mind. DISCOBOLI reminds us that we are here not merely to observe the greatness of others or follow preconditioned notions of who we are, but to explore and manifest more of our own unlimited potential, to understand and play our best role in the cosmic game, and to bring glory and harmonizing victory to a mortal yet ever divine humanity.

Artist’s Note: I have the greatest respect for Yayoi Kusama’s creative contributions to expanding our human experience. Although DISCOBOLI was not consciously conceived as an homage to her, for those familiar with her work, these images can be viewed as a bridge connecting her insight and vision with convergent expressions in Nature; or as drawing a tangible thread between her superior creative imagination and the subtle dimensions of manifest reality.
