Eyes of Heaven: iPhone as Cosmic Translator
Deborah Goudreault’s Eyes of Heaven began as an iPhone image experiment to push the limits of ordinary cell phone camera use for selfies and time bound images, into more expanded purpose as a cosmic translator. When asked about Eyes of Heaven Goudreault answered, “I hope it will make us think more about how our ordinary daily cell phone camera use reinforces our conditioned identities and limits our experience of what is known to what we see with the physical eyes and our fixed attention on what is outside us in surface forms and events, I have tried to work with a tool which we all have in our pockets to reflect the potential of a more unlimited, universally networked human totality that waits to be discovered below the material surfaces of nature and the self, and nurtured within.”
Each image is a digitally sculpted interpretation of Goudreault’s study of fragments of works by Carolina Caycedo in the last pre-pandemic exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston MA. In these impressions what was already a compelling social message regarding the destructive impact of dams and corporate control of rivers in South America is elevated to reveal and project a more cosmic Energy and Intelligence flowing through their combined creativity. With only an iPhone in hand, Goudreault frees the universal essence of these forms and gives us an energy and experience of solace and hope during this viral global transformation.
"There is no denying now that we are more than separate and finite. Each day reminds us that we are connected by life and breath to each other and all of nature, and that what we do, think and feel reverberates throughout the network of humanity. Contemplating the subtle minimalist images in Eyes of Heaven, one finds an infinite space to transcend our past preconceptions and envision and nurture the seeds within the self of greater individual and collective awareness and responsibility. Each image is given as an inspiration to cultivate more open perception, hearts, and minds and, even when our stay at home orders are eased, to keep some time for exploring the inner dimensions of the self, unbinding the Light within, and bringing our part of a more unlimited network of Energy and Intelligence on-line. What we do and how we use each breath while we wait for science to develop Covid vaccines and treatments is just as critical as the research itself. The future we share depends not just on science or technological innovation, but how deeply we can “zoom” in on the unknown dimensions of our own selves and realize and fulfill our role as empowered contributors in transforming the circumstances which brought us to this point.
Maybe it is these images or maybe something else that will encourage viewers to now cross the known boundaries and perceived limits of a separate and finite human identity, but that is what must occur because we can not afford a mass sheltering of humanity that leaves us stagnant, disempowered by loss, or reaching for the past. Whatever we can do to purify and balance the self and expand our awareness of who we are during this period of physical separation and seclusion, and after, will elevate and advance our collective experience exponentially. Goudreault’s heaven is not an unfathomable mythic realm of unattainable Light, but a symbol of pure Consciousness, and the comprehensive and unifying perception and intelligence which lives within the depths of all humanity. Her Eyes of Heaven give us a space to explore and connect with our own universally networked Energy and Intelligence; each impression rendering a field of concentrated Light, awareness, refined energetic frequency, and a vehicle for becoming greater projections not of fear and vulnerability, but of the will to harmonize and heal, and make radiant and abundant our relationship to the self, each other, and all of Earth." -Deborah Goudreault
